Periodontal Services

Periodontal disease is an infection that affects the structures surrounding the teeth. These include the gums, the cementum that covers the root, the periodontal ligament and the alveolar bone. Periodontal disease ranges from minor gum inflammation to severe issues that can result in damage to the soft tissue and the bone that supports the teeth. Periodontal disease is caused by the bacteria in our mouth. The bacteria, together with mucus or other particles, form plaque on the teeth. Brushing and flossing help to remove plaque, but when plaque hardens, tartar is deposited on the teeth, and a professional cleaning is needed to remove it. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Symptoms of gum disease may include:

  • Sensitive teeth
  • Persistent Bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Tender, bleeding, red or swollen gums
  • Receding gums or longer appearing teeth
  • Painful chewing

In most cases, gum disease is caused by poor dental hygiene. This can lead to plaque deposits on the teeth which harden and turn into tartar. In an effort to eliminate harmful oral bacteria, the body’s immune system releases substances that cause inflammation in the gums and periodontal ligaments. If treatment is not administered in time, the infection can progress to an advanced stage, causing the gums to pull away from the teeth, leading to the creation of periodontal pockets. The damage does not stop there and can lead to tooth loss if not treated.
